Divergent

The movie series that helped sink some of the credibility of YA book adaptations. Worse the books were really good then movie makers just threw it in the crapper. The first movie was a bit decent (sort of, meh) but the sequels. No. Here we go.

Lead characters Tris and Four stand above a futuristic Chicago.

Source: Wikipedia

Summary on Google: Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) lives in a futuristic world in which society is divided into five factions. As each person enters adulthood, he or she must choose a faction and commit to it for life. Tris chooses Dauntless -- those who pursue bravery above all else. However, her initiation leads to the discovery that she is a Divergent and will never be able to fit into just one faction. Warned that she must conceal her status, Tris uncovers a looming war which threatens everyone she loves.

What can I say? When I went to the movies to see this I was very excited. I loved the book trilogy and was looking forward to a movie that could compete with the Hunger Games movie franchise. Even if it didn't, how could this movie actually be bad? What I got instead was a movie surprisingly of much less quality than expected. A lot of things were introduced but not explained. The system of choosing your faction was made to look confusing and ridiculous. The true breakout star in the movie was Miles Teller and he played Peter, the guy we the audience should hate. But that happens when the movie has way too many dull parts making a bully look much more appealing when he appears. Tris was done well enough by the actress playing her. Yet I still held out hope that this movie was good and had a number of positive moments that caught my attention. After leaving the theater still feeling good about it, time changed my mind. After the nostalgia wore off I truly realized what I saw was an okay movie at best and not a very good adaptation. All happiness changed to disappointment.

Now looking back this movie was the best of the lot. I skipped Insurgent without a moment's hesitation after seeing that dumb first trailer. But decided to give the latest entry Allegiant a shot. Oh man was I not disappointed in a bad way. I knew it was not likely to be that good but yeah. I left the theater okay but knew this movie series was meant for mediocrity. Clearly no one this time around has the concept of how gas travels in the real world much less in a movie. Too bad for Veronica Roth who wrote a book series far from that. So this movie at best can be watched if you're interested in it. For those who love the movie series, good for you. I'll stick with the book and maybe re-watch the first movie.

Thanks for stopping by. Did any of you go see Allegiant? If you did was there a moment when a creepy flubber thing popped up?

  1. That is funny because my step daughter and I just saw Allegiant last week and I have never seen her so angry at a movie. She literally looked at me 5 minutes in and said, what is this, this didn't happen. She loves the series and has it practically memorized. Me, I read them once and so I knew in general the changes but it had been a year so I didn't remember the detail she does.
    It was disappointing for sure.

  2. Haven't seen this one either, but my publisher is doing the books for my country.

  3. After not enjoying the two Hunger Games movies I watched, I decided to skip these as well. And no, I haven't read the books. Not my genre.

    1. If you did not enjoy Hunger Games you were right to skip the Divergent movies.

  4. Since I do not watch this type of movie I can not comment on it. But what I can comment on is the sign that says "I Am A Christian Blogger" as I am as well. And it is always nice to meet others.

  5. I read the series although I did struggle a bit with the third book. I was excited that they were making the movies but, like you, not that happy with the first one and lost interest in the movie series. I never did make it to Allegiant. Maybe a rental someday?

  7. I didn't read the books so I enjoyed the movies; I haven't seen Allegiant yet. It is sad if they don't try to keep at least pretty much with the books when they make the movies.

  8. Honestly, I did not like the book either (I only read the first one and gave up). The world she built just did not make any sense to me. Or maybe I am just too old for YA... :D

  9. This was both the only movie and the only book in the series that I read. Mostly because of all the bad reviews for both the sequel of the book and the sequel of the movie. I have yet to decide if I want to read them but more than likely I won't bother.

  10. I still haven't read the books or seen the movies. I'll need to rent the first on this weekend.

  11. I didn't go see Allegiant. I saw the first two, not in theaters though. I didn't think they'd be worth the money.

  12. What a shame! I'll never understand how a good book can be turned into a bad film, I mean, you have all the material, what else do you need?

  13. I saw the movie and then refused to read the book. Since you say the book is better, maybe I will give it a chance.

  14. Such a shame when they totally botch a book series. I walked out of the last Hunger Games near the end, I was so angry.

  15. I only read the first book...I was a little tired of the whole dystopian thing by then and I felt there were better dystopian books (the Matched trilogy, for instance) that weren't made into movies during the brief national obsession that was that genre! But I did like the star...whatever her name is. I didn't like her on The Secret Life of the American Teenager but she's really developed her talent since then.

  16. I still haven't read the Hunger Games, though I watched the first movie, so haven't touched Divergent. I'm with Stephanie above...getting tired of the dystopian thing. It's so depressing.

  17. Yes, the perverse utopia or distopia plots are wearing thin for me. I am happy that females are featured in these stories for a refreshing take on the concept. The Divergent series is OK. It is entertaining but not eye opening.

  18. Interesting thoughts. I've only seen Insurgent, the only one you haven't seen! I enjoyed it but I thought the antagonist, Janine, lacked depth. I'm thinking seriously about reading the books after reading your post ;)
