From the Great Beyond Bloghop

So which celebrity would I summon in a seance? Let me do a dramatic version of a seance for you.

Let me just brush off my crystal ball.

Now watch! While I the great fortune teller Sheena the Omnipresent brings forth the spirit I'll be communing with for the From the Great Beyond Bloghop.

Whispering the words of power passed down from generations, my hands move expertly around the crystal ball. An image begins to form. Aw it's him! He has returned and now there's an open line with the spirit world?

Heath Ledger! It appears his spirit is shown as he best looked in life. He went so young and his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight is still one of his best and among his final before he passed on.

Oh what to to ask. My questions would include how he felt winning an Oscar after his death? How death has changed his view on life? What he now thinks of all his movie roles? What the response to his role as The Joker feels now since he has become one of the best movie villains of all times up there with Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Lecter? Is seeing loved ones from the other side hard even with the time that has passed?

*Takes a breath*. Alas I'm not a real fortune teller but if I were like Ledger I'd totally transform myself for the role.

See?

Amazing Aurora Sky Covers, Celebrate Meme and Big Dreams

I'm excited to share with you the covers for the Aurora Sky: Vampire Hunter Series by Nikki Jefford. She is also author of Entangled: Spellbound Book One, another series. You can read the details of the Phat Puppy photo shoot that helped bring Nikki's character to life here

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

If there is one thing eighteen-year-old Aurora Sky wants, it's to get off the iceberg she calls home. Being kissed before she graduates wouldn't hurt either. Then a near-fatal car wreck changes everything. Government agents step in and save Aurora's life in exchange for her services as a vampire hunter in Alaska. Basically she's a glorified chew toy. All thanks to her rare blood type which sends a vampire into temporary paralysis before she has to finish the job...by hand. Now Aurora's only friends are groupies of the undead and the only boy she can think about may very well be a vampire. And if he's a vampire, will she be forced to kill him?

AURORA SKY: VAMPIRE HUNTER is the first in a YA Mature/New Adult paranormal fantasy series.

Amazon US | Amazon UK | Nook | Sony Kobo | iTunes | Smashwords | Goodreads

Love Bites. Probation sucks. Thanks to Dante's recklessness, Aurora is now partners with Valerie: the redheaded, backstabbing vixen. Dante is in full flirt mode. Fane's tactics are more ruthless. Something carnal has awakened in Aurora and neither boy is helping tame her cravings. When a member of the unit's team is found dead, Aurora and Valerie are sent after a vampire in Sitka, but Aurora suspects the killer's much closer to home.

The Faerie War Book Review

Book: The Faerie War by Rachel Morgan

Source: E-book from author in exchange for review

Genre: Fantasy

Book Review

This is the big conclusion to the Creepy Hollow series. With Creepy Hollow in ruins it seems all might be lost at the start of this now turned tragic tale. Violet has lost her memory and the two boys she loved are on opposite sides. One wants to find her and save the Fae Realm and the other wants to rule it with a mighty hand - weather powers don't hurt. The Faerie War is darker than all the other volumes combined and readers are introduced to the underground fae and other creatures in detail never shown before in the other books. Rachel really outdid herself showing another side to what we were previously introduced as evil or troublesome through the eyes of guardians, namely Violet whose POV we get most in the series. With Draven tearing the realm apart to quash all free will and using a power only defeat-able by a special person n- no one knows- who needs to wield a weapon only he or she can use, how can Violet, Ryn and all the displaced guardians and their allies win this battle for their home and people? You have to get a copy to find out. This epic conclusion will have readers anxious to see how it all ends and if you haven't started, get going.

I have little criticism. Sometimes it can be a bit predictable and Violet can be seen redoing past mistakes but no one is perfect even in fiction taking place in a magical realm. Violet's romantic interest in another guardian in the last volume seemed awfully convenient and in this book he's the one spear heading the search for her. Yet this doesn't take away from the wonderful work of art this book is and to judge it by it's cover would only be a mistake if you don't think words can beat a beautiful image.

Misha Guest Post: A little South Africa and The Vanquished Knight

I'm happy today to introduce another author doing a guest post this month. This time it's Misha Gerike who some of you know as the blogger at k. But she has also recently released her novel The Vanished Knight and now I'll hand the reigns over to her.

Thanks so much for letting me visit, Sheena!

Sheena asked me to write about living in South Africa, but the only way to get what it’s like is to actually live here. Instead, I thought I’d share the top five greatest things and five sucky things about living in South Africa.

The great:

1)      The weather. Plenty of sun, not a lot of disaster phenomena.
2)      Climate variation. There’s a place in SA for everyone. From dry hot deserts to tropical paradises.
3)      The views. Especially in the Western Cape, but not limited to it, there are some spectacularly beautiful places to visit. If you’re in Cape Town, do go to Table Mountain, but do take up to four hour drives in any direction.
4)      Standards of living are pretty good, if you can afford it. In my town, what most Europeans would call a mansion costs about the same as a small two (maybe) bedroomed house in Europe. Food costs (in particular meat) are relatively low.
5)      The food. Particularly biltong, which is cured beef similar to jerky.

The not-so-great:

1)      Poverty and unemployment. No one really knows how bad it is, but counting the people who gave up on looking for work, we might look at something like a 50% unemployment rate.
2)      Crime. Some areas are very dangerous to live in, due to the above-mentioned poverty and gang activity.
3)      State healthcare, pensions, service delivery, education etc. not at a particularly high standard. Especially outside Western Cape.
4)      Inflation. Our target percentage is between 3% and 6%. Reality is 5%-6%, so now some of you might see why I respond to complaints about 1 or 2% with amusement. To us, it’s not really cause for concern. It’s a fact of life. Unless you’re poor and living on the dole. In which case, odds are you’re screwed.
5)      Bank costs. Due to said inflation, all our banks levy bank charges in order to be profitable. So in a sense, we’re all screwed money wise. If we bury our money in the back yard, inflation will wreck its value in a few years. Savings accounts actually aren’t much better, because the bank charges are often more than the interest rate. And if not, the difference isn’t big enough to match inflation. Yes people. In SA, we can and do save money in a bank and still walk away with less money than we’ve saved.
The verdict? I love living in South Africa, and think anyone with a certain amount of smarts can actually eke out a great life here. Also, it’s a great place for foreigners with Pounds, Euros and Dollars to vacation. Because your money value multiplies by up to a factor of ten, once you’ve converted it to Rands. To give you an idea, a good, middle income for a single person equates about $700-$1000 per month.
At the same time, writing about the negative bits to South Africa reminds me of just how fortunate I am. Got a job, a good salary, private healthcare, and a life-style comfortable enough that inflation, while felt, doesn’t really cramp my style. I know that this is an immense blessing, the value of which I’ll probably never fully grasp.
Would you want to visit in/live in South Africa?

And don't forget the novel.

Blurb:

Since the death of her parents, Callan Blair has been shunted from one foster family to another, her dangerous secret forcing the move each time. Her latest foster family quickly ships her off to an exclusive boarding school in the Cumbrian countryside. While her foster-brother James makes it his mission to get Callan expelled, a nearby ancient castle holds the secret doorway to another land...

When Callan is forced through the doorway, she finds herself in the magical continent of Tardith, where she’s shocked to learn her schoolmates Gawain and Darrion are respected soldiers in service to the king of Nordaine, one of Tardith's realms. More than that, the two are potential heirs to the Black Knight—Nordaine's crown prince.

But when the Black Knight fails to return from a mysterious trip, the realm teeters on the brink of war. Darrion and Gawain set out to find him, while Callan discovers there is more to her family history than she thought. The elves are claiming she is their princess.

Now with Darrion growing ever more antagonistic and her friendship with Gawain blossoming, Callan must decide whether to stay in Nordaine—where her secret grows ever more threatening—or go to the elves and uncover the truth about her family before war sets the realms afire.

About the Author

Growing up in small-town Oklahoma, there were limits on the amount and types of entertainment at my disposal. Perhaps that’s why I set my imagination free. After collecting degrees in psychology and counseling, life brought me to Missouri, Texas, and Northern California—where I currently read, write, and live. I fill my spare time playing video games, watching movies, planning for the zombie apocalypse, reading graphic novels, and playing with my dogs.

My passion for New Adult literature led me to producing the weekly New Adult Lit Chat on Twitter, and contributing to the NA Alley Blog. I’m also the author of the Moonsongs Books, a series of New Adult, speculative-rural fantasy novelettes.

Book Review: Taste Test by Kelly Fiore and Thanks for your support

Taste Test by Kelly Fiore
Genre: Young Adult, Romance, Contemporary
Purchase: AmazonBarnes and Noble, The Book Depository
Source: Netgalley

Summary: If you can grill it, smoke it, or fry it, Nora Henderson knows all about it. She’s been basting baby back ribs and pulling pork at her father’s barbeque joint since she was tall enough to reach the counter. When she’s accepted to Taste Test, a reality-television teen cooking competition, Nora can’t wait to leave her humble hometown behind, even if it means saying good-bye to her dad and her best friend, Billy. Once she’s on set, run-ins with her high-society roommate and the maddeningly handsome—not to mention talented—son of a famous chef, Christian Van Lorten, mean Nora must work even harder to prove herself. But as mysterious accidents plague the kitchen arena, protecting her heart from one annoyingly charming fellow contestant in particular becomes the least of her concerns. Someone is conducting real-life eliminations, and if Nora doesn’t figure out who, she could be next to get chopped for good.

With romance and intrigue as delectable as the winning recipes included in the story, this debut novel will be devoured by all.

Review

The Good: This story takes you on the journey of a real girl in a reality show. Taste Test is Nora's big chance to win a scholarship and go beyond her father's BBQ joint, Smoke Signals. She is in love with cooking and while she loves her father and what they do, she wants to expand and see what she can really do. Nora has rivals, makes and loses friends and has to decide for herself if she really has what it takes to win this cooking reality show. Christian comes off at the start as an a-hole, no holding back. The twists and turns in this novel are more than enough to keep you glued whether or not you're a foodie and it's great to read a book without the potential couple playing tonsil hockey a few pages in or having sex on the table. You go through a tumultuous romance and whether or not you want things to work out, these characters don't leave you disappointed. The secondary characters shine as well and what is a reality show without tell alls and confessions. You get those as well as the producers work hard to get the juicy bits from the contests. Oh and did I tell you I'm not a fan of reality shows yet this book had me hooked

The Bad: There are times when the story drags and that can take away some of it's brilliance. But Taste Test characters will keep you coming back for more. Where this book falls in places in story, it makes up for with captivating characters who pull at your heart and make you love them or hate them. So while the book is almost excellent, the parts where the story wasn't enticing enough had to be saved by attachment to the characters and how they'd end up.

My Verdict: I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone. I'm not a fan of reality shows but this book has me hooked. Proving you can write a great book within a reality show without killing readership with all the 'reality'.

Thanks for your Support

Last Friday I wrote a post Getting Personal: Bad News about being sick and having to postpone the release of Sacrifice HER until 2014. So many of you came by and offered prayers and well wishes, it was almost overwhelming to see all who were hoping for my recovery and condolences about having to delay my novella. While I'm trying to proportion my time and wait until I can get the tests done so I can find the source, I must thank all who took the time to offer me support. Sometimes readers wonder if their words are noticed by the blogger/writer. Let me tell you that every last one of you was noticed by me and I'm so grateful to be a part of such a loving community. Thank you and I love you all.

Getting Personal: Bad News

This week has been a tough one. With the flew last week I had a few setbacks but got through all right. This week was different however. I'm, certain bloggers have noticed a big depletion in my comments on other blogs. That has been because I have been unwell and yesterday it took a bad turn. At first besides the flu and some fatigue I was OK. But then around 9:25 a.m. I started to feel really bad and decided to lie down some more instead of getting ready to go to the library. Shortly after I felt tremendous pain go through me and my arms and legs felt like lead. I was nearly immobile over the next two hours. Right now I am better and the pain has dissipated but I do know I'm getting worse and my parents are willing to help foot the bill to get my lab tests done before the end of October to find out exactly what is wrong. Sadly this is only part one of the bad news.

Part two involves my upcoming novel Sacrifice HER and my blogging presence. It almost kills me to say all plans for publishing Sacrifice HER will be delayed until further notice (it now has a tentative February 2014 release date). With the chance of my illness being an auto immune disease just by the list of potential illnesses the doctor wanted to test for based off my last doctor's visit, I want to focus fully on my health and also remove any chance that if my prognoses is serious any fear of not being around to promote or share my book. I never planned on being an absentee promoter or author and would rather delay than leave my book to languish or to others. It is awful when I see all the effort and plans I'd made. Just know that this was a tough and heart wrenching decision. But if I had decided to hold back maybe I would renege and only change my mind after things went further and I turned out to be seriously ill. I'd rather delay know than pack up shop later. Thank you for all your support and know I still plan to publish The Sacrifice Series in 2014 though with a slightly amended schedule. When it comes to blogging I have been quite absentee this week and might be again in the future. On the days I doubt I can comment or don't feel well enough to post, I might be absent or just leave comments. Know that blogging has become a passion to me and I will miss all of you when I can't stop by. Again thank you for your support and know this was an extremely tough decision.

Book Review: Me, Cinderella? by Aubrey Rose

Me, Cinderella? by Aubrey Rose
Genre: Romance
Source: Netgalley
Purchase: AmazonBarnes and Noble

Summary: Brynn Tomlin could never afford to follow her heart. But when she sees a stranger shivering in the snow outside of the college library, an inexplicable urge leads her to buy him a hot cup of coffee. It's just a small act of kindness, a few words of conversation. Brynn should be focusing on her finals, after all, not on the man who looked up at her gratefully with piercing blue eyes.

He could have been anyone - a janitor on break, a graduate student, a bum. But the man standing outside in the cold turns out to be Dr. Eliot Herceg, one of the most brilliant minds in mathematics and heir to a fortune. After years of reclusive isolation, he now finds his heart awakening to the kind girl whose name he does not know.

Brynn has spent her life trying to forget her desires, and Eliot's deep wounds have taken nearly a decade to heal. After so much hurt, will either of them be able to open their hearts again?

Review

The Good: Brynn is a typical girl who while somewhat impoverished doesn't let that stop her from trying to achieve her dreams. Elliot is a man with a sad past and while that might sound typical Aubrey writes him in such a way that he comes off as an original touching character that draws you in. Seeing the romance develop through both perspectives is perfect because you get to see how each person feels and when something goes right or wrong you have an idea why. Also it doesn't hurt to fall for a brilliant mathematical mind when you too are interested in the subject as well. This story isn't typical and the fact that the author is willing to use Mathematics, a subject that is widely unappreciated in a novel (especially in romance) has to be appreciated. The traveling to another country is well displayed including the contrast on how people live in different countries and the clear disparity between the wealthy and not so wealthy and impoverished. Also having characters not fall into bed in the first few chapters is actually refreshing.

The Bad: What the story brings about in originality it loses in luster. The romance is sometimes less than stellar and parts of the novel are just plain boring. Things happen that sometimes turn off a reader more than bring them in and while you have to have twists and surprises you have to be aware of the reader and their feelings well. No reader likes feeling robbed or unfairly blindsided. Also while I get Brynn loves math it sort of came off as disrespectful to me how much she attacked the written word. Yes people hurt her but you can't just put all the blame on words then say math never lies or goes wrong. That is not only a misconception, it really irked me personally. We get people said hurtful things. Doesn't make words evil and math a perfect God, geesh.

My Verdict: If you enjoy romance and stories that don't follow the typical in bed the same day model then this book might be for you. But be prepared this isn't a book full of heated passion or pseudo erotica. If that's the kind of romance you read look elsewhere. Also with some of the pitfalls you might want to be careful before reading. If after you read my review you still feel this book is for you and you ignore the negatives, then I say go for it.

Guest Post: Nana Prah on being a Writing Newbie and her Novel

Today I'm handing the reigns over to Nana Prah, blogger and author of Love Through Time. Take it away Nana.

It’s not easy being green
Okay, so I stole the line from Kermit the frog. I’m giving him credit so it’s all right. I’m a newbie in this book writing world. And yes it is a whole new world (hmmm, fantasy book idea?). I love writing. Even when the words on my computer screen are crap, I love it.

What I don’t like is being new at it, especially the marketing aspect. Not knowing where to go or how to get there. I thank God for my author friends who have been in the system for a while and are willing and ready to help. Without them I would have been running around looking for something I didn’t need, while what I was supposed to have was sitting right in front of my face.

It’s not easy being a new writer, but I’m sure it gets better with time, everything usually does. To all of the seasoned authors helping out the newbies, like me, I’m sending out a huge imaginary gift basket of muffins.

Novel

Blurb:
Defending her family – no problem. Recalling past lives – maybe just a small problem. Taking a chance on love again – well…

Jasmine Gibson has her world turned upside down when she meets gorgeous Sean Taylor. He’s the first man she’s been attracted to since her fiancé dumped her two years ago. But when the disturbing daydreams start, Jasmine begins to fear that her actions in a past life may have finally caught up with her.

Sean finds it impossible to stay away from Jasmine even though he can’t shake the inexplicable feeling of betrayal, simmering deep inside him every time he sees her.

To complicate things, someone is out to hurt Jasmine and every time she and Sean are together, the police have to be called. Even if Jasmine can make Sean trust her, the two of them may not stay alive long enough to enjoy their love this time around.

Excerpt:

She was coming to terms about their past lives, but he was having trouble just dealing with her in this one.

“I must have been a great man in previous life,” Sean said jokingly, but Jasmine’s expression turned serious as she held onto the doorpost. “Are you all right? Are you getting lightheaded?”

“No, I’m fine.”
But he could tell something was bothering her. “Now you’re holding something back from me.”

“Do you believe in past lives?”

“I haven’t thought about it. I’ve seen so much in my travels around the world that I wouldn’t be surprised if it existed. Do you?”

“I think it might exist, and the thought about coming back and making your soul better is very appealing. At the same time it could be painful, especially if you hurt someone else in a past life and met them again in another.”

Sean felt a chill go up his spine. He knew there was something more to this conversation, but he couldn’t pin point it. He wanted to stay and talk with her about it, but he had to get back to studying.

He leaned down and kissed her cheek. It was nothing but a friendly kiss, but he felt the shock of it straight down to the soles of his feet. Jasmine looked just as affected as he was.
